Kako primary school is located in Kako area of Makueni county. The area is largely dry receiving little rainfall and no permanent rivers flow around.

In a bid to ensure access to clean and safe water for the students and teachers, Excellent, in collaboration with our partners, ASDF, supported the construction of a water tank at the school.

A visit to the school showcased the immense transformation that came with the tank to the pupils and teachers among other beneficiaries.

The tank is used by 350 pupils, 13 members of teaching staff and two members of non-teaching staff. The tank has also been of help to pupils at a care centre for the mentally ill located within the compound of the primary school with a population of 50 children.

"We used to depend on water from an earth dam and community borehole before this tank, it was full of inconveniences and created conflicts between the school and the community."

Kako primary school has been the area to host primary school games at zonal level, bringing together eight schools for two days; during these days water from the tank is highly, used increasing the number of indirect beneficiaries.

Purity Mavindu, 51, is a teacher at the school, she opens up on what the tank means to the students and the teachers: "The tank has been of help to us in the previous seasons where it held water... We used to depend on water from an earth dam and community borehole before this tank, it was full of inconveniences and created conflicts between the school and the community."

Apart from holding water, the tank was recently painted with messages aimed at promoting hand washing culture among the beneficiaries of the tank.

"Nowadays I see pupils wash mangoes before eating which is a new trend" says Mrs Mavindu.

Antony Musami, 10, is in class six, he talks on lessons learned from the messages: "The messages have taught me that washing hands after going toilet and before eating helps prevent germs and disease infection" says Musami.
